My mother and Lin Zeyu’s mother have been best friends since their school days. But as for Lin Zeyu and me, we’ve always been notorious childhood rivals—put us in the same room, and sparks were guaranteed to fly. Even after making it to university, we never got along. We competed over everything, always trying to outdo each other.
So when my mom told me during winter break that Lin Zeyu had been in a car accident and asked me to visit him at Huaxing Hospital, I agreed without hesitation. After all, I usually lost every argument with him. This time, seeing him at his lowest, I couldn’t help but feel a bit eager.
When I arrived at the hospital, I found Lin Zeyu in the middle of a meltdown.
“Get out! Everyone, get out!” he shouted, flinging pillows and blankets onto the floor. A ceramic mug on his nightstand nearly hit me as I walked in.
“Whoa, what happened here?” I dodged the mug and carefully stood behind the door.
Since Lin Zeyu’s parents were on a business trip in Europe and couldn’t make it back in time, his best friend, Xu Minghao, was the only one there to look after him. Xu Minghao and Lin Zeyu were inseparable growing up, and they’d always gang up on me.
Seeing me, Xu Minghao smirked, “Well, if it isn’t Chen Yiran. What brings you here? The wind must be blowing in the wrong direction.”
I’d always been a bit of a neat freak, and they’d tease me about it endlessly. But I’d grown a thick skin over the years, and their words didn’t bother me anymore.
“Mom sent me to check if he’s still alive. If not, I’ll light some incense for him,” I shot back.
Xu Minghao’s face turned green, and he was about to retort when Lin Zeyu suddenly spoke up from the bed.
“Chen Yiran?” His voice was hesitant and gentle, so different from his usual sarcastic tone.
I instinctively answered, “Yeah?”
The moment I replied, his rage vanished. He settled back on the bed, calm and quiet. Xu Minghao was completely thrown off. “Seriously? You forgot everyone but him?”
I was confused until the doctor explained. Lin Zeyu had suffered a head injury in the accident and lost all his memories—except for me. I was the only person he remembered.
Watching Lin Zeyu glare warily at everyone else, only relaxing when he looked at me, I couldn’t believe it.
“You really don’t remember anything?” I asked.
He nodded, looking a bit lost. “I don’t remember anything except your name and face.”
Wow, karma really does come around. Seeing him so vulnerable, and Xu Minghao so frustrated, was oddly satisfying.
Then a mischievous idea popped into my head. I grabbed Lin Zeyu’s hand and decided to mess with him before he got his memories back.
“Your name is Lin Zeyu. And I’m Chen Yiran—your boyfriend,” I declared.
Xu Minghao exploded, “Yiran, you’re shameless! Zeyu, don’t listen to him, he’s lying!”
But Lin Zeyu didn’t even look at Xu Minghao. Instead, he focused on me, his eyes full of doubt. “Really?”
“Of course! Xu Minghao has always been against us being together. Now he’s trying to use your amnesia to break us up!” I lied, keeping a straight face.
Lin Zeyu thought for a moment, then looked at Xu Minghao and said coldly, “Get out.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. The doctor had warned us not to upset Lin Zeyu, so Xu Minghao, red-faced and fuming, left the room with a huff. “Just you wait, Chen Yiran.”
